Flat vs Hills

Why seaside flat routes are perfect for pensioners

Hilly Mountain Routes

  • Steep climbs strain knees and joints
  • High impact on lower back
  • Requires advanced fitness level
  • Frequent brake use (hard on hands)
  • Recovery takes longer

Saulkrasti Flat Coastal Routes

  • Gentle, consistent pedaling rhythm
  • Minimal joint stress
  • Accessible for all fitness levels
  • Easy pace, easy stopping
  • More time to enjoy scenery

What Riders Say

Real experiences from our community

"I wasn't sure I could still ride a bike after my knee surgery. But the flat terrain here made all the difference. Now I'm out three times a week and my doctor's amazed at how much better I'm doing."

— Margaret, 68

"The white dunes are absolutely beautiful. You're cycling through something that looks like a painting. Plus the group's so welcoming — we've made real friends out here."

— Henrik, 72

"My grandkids think I'm cool now. They can't believe I'm cycling 20km twice a week. The guides are clear, the routes are safe, and honestly it's given me more energy than I've had in years."

— Søren, 71

Common Questions

Everything you want to know about cycling on the Saulkrasti route

Do I need an expensive bike?

No. A basic hybrid or cruiser bike works perfectly. What matters is that it's well-maintained — good brakes, properly inflated tires, and a comfortable seat.

What's the distance of the Saulkrasti route?

The main loop is approximately 22 kilometers with an easy 8km starter version. You can ride the full distance or turn back anytime. There's no pressure to complete anything.

Is the path safe for older riders?

Yes. It's a dedicated cycling path — no car traffic. The terrain is flat and well-maintained. We recommend helmets and reflective gear, and we've got experienced riders to support beginners.

What should I bring on a ride?

Water, a light snack, your helmet, and sun protection. We have rest stops along the route. A basic repair kit is handy but not essential if you're riding with a group.

Can I ride alone or must I join a group?

Both are fine. Many of us ride solo and just use the route maps. Groups are available if you want company and support — that's what we're here for.

What if I haven't ridden a bike in years?

You're not alone. We've got riders who hadn't cycled since childhood. Start slow, ride short distances, and build from there. Your body remembers faster than you'd think.
