Andris Kalniņš
Senior Cycling Routes Editor
Specializing in accessible seaside flat cycling routes for pensioners across Latvia's coastal regions
"A great cycling route isn't about distance or difficulty. It's about the moment when someone who hasn't ridden a bike in twenty years discovers they can still do this — safely, comfortably, and with a view worth remembering. That's what I design for."
— Andris Kalniņš
16 Years of Cycling Route Design
Andris brings deep experience in creating safe, comfortable cycling infrastructure specifically suited for mature riders exploring Latvia's most beautiful coastal landscapes.
Route Documentation
Over 8,000 kilometers personally cycled and mapped across Latvia. Every route has been tested for terrain conditions, elevation changes, rest points, and amenities that matter to older cyclists.
Senior-Focused Design
Specializes in flat, low-impact routes that prioritize safety and comfort. Considers weather exposure, proximity to medical facilities, and accessibility for riders with varying fitness levels.
Coastal Route Expertise
Deep knowledge of Vidzeme's seaside cycling infrastructure. Specializes in routes through the Saulkrasti white dune and pine forest areas — some of Latvia's most scenic and accessible coastal terrain.
Guide Publishing
Published comprehensive cycling guides since 2012. His work combines field research with practical details that help pensioners navigate Latvia's natural beauty safely and confidently.
A Path Through Cycling and Community
Community Recreation & Education
Started as a recreation coordinator in Riga, organizing senior programs at local community centers. This experience revealed a genuine gap: older cyclists needed safe, accessible routes designed specifically for them. He pursued a degree in Tourism and Recreation Management from the University of Latvia, completing it in 2008 with a focus on accessible outdoor recreation.
Route Documentation Begins
Joined the Latvian Tourism Development Agency as a routes specialist. Spent four years systematically documenting coastal cycling paths, testing terrain, and building a database of conditions that matter to older riders. His work was meticulous — every route was cycled multiple times, in different seasons.
Breakthrough & Recognition
Published his comprehensive guide to flat, low-impact cycling routes in the Vidzeme region. The guide became the foundation for his specialized expertise. Over the next eight years, he continued expanding his work, personally cycling over 8,000 kilometers and refining his understanding of what makes routes safe and enjoyable for pensioners.
Somakinternational SIA & Current Role
Now leads the creation of detailed cycling guides at somakinternational Three SIA, combining his field knowledge with comprehensive research. His focus remains on practical details: rest points, surface conditions, weather exposure, proximity to medical facilities. He's helped hundreds of pensioners discover Latvia's natural beauty safely.
